3D Printing and Super-Power Grid Selected to Top Ten 2013 Breakthrough Technologies

The United States announced the 2013 MIT top ten breakthrough technology, of which "deep learning" came in first place, the other are "temporary social media", "pre-breeding DNA sequencing", "3D printing based on manufacturing", "blue collar Robotics, Memory Migration, Smartwatches, Ultra-Efficient Solar, Cheap Cell Phone Big Data, and Super Power Grid.

The authoritative magazine MIT's Technology Review lists 10 of the most important annual technologies each year. Unlike previous years, this year the magazine first used "breakthrough technology" instead of "emerging technologies" in the past. For the definition of groundbreaking technology, the magazine editor gives an explanation that allows people to use the technology in new ways.

The magazine's latest issue of the list of "2013 Top Ten Breakthrough Technologies" featured a broad range of breakthrough technologies such as deep learning systems that allow machines to think in the future or memory implants to brain damage Patients can regain their memory; 3D printing technology and the super grid can be critical to sustained and steady economic growth; and temporary social media can change how we communicate. These groundbreaking technologies are likely to change the world for the foreseeable future.

1 Deep Learning: Let the machine learn to think and make decisions

In July 2012, American inventor and machine intelligence expert Ray Kurzweil, after visiting Larry Page, chief executive of Google Inc., unveiled his grand dream of building a truly intelligent computer - Understand the language, then make inferences and make your own decisions.

Not only was Google's massive database and powerful computing power appealing to Kurzweil, but it also included the company's amazing progress in deep learning, a new area in artificial intelligence. Last June, Google tested its deep learning system for research and development: picking out the cat's image from 10 million randomly selected YouTube videos. The result showed that the system was twice as accurate as any of the previous image recognition systems.

Google also uses the technology to more reliably identify fragmented sounds and reduce the error rate of speech recognition in its newly developed Android phone software.

Depth learning applications also extend beyond speech and image recognition in other areas. Last October, a team of three graduate students and two professors used in-depth learning to win a contest sponsored by Merck & Co., a chemical and pharmaceutical company, that focused on identifying the molecules that could lead to new drugs. Peter Lee, dean of the Microsoft Research Institute in the U.S., said deep learning has triggered many new big challenges in AI.
