China Automotive Industry Events (1987-1992)


★ In May 1987, the State Council issued a document to revoke the China Automobile Industry Corporation and form the China Automobile Industry Federation. On June 25, the China Federation of Automobile Manufacturers was established in Beijing. Chen Zutao served as Chairman of the Board of Directors.

★ In July 1987, FAW and Chrysler Motor Company of the United States held a signing ceremony for the introduction of a light engine agreement at the Great Hall of the People.

★ In August 1987, the State Council’s Beidaihe Conference discussed the development of the sedan industry and determined the production bases of three cars: FAW, Second Automobile, and Shanghai.

★ In October 1987, China's first high-speed test track for automobiles was built at the Hainan Automotive Test Station.

★ In November 1987, China Jialing Industrial Co., Ltd. (Group) was established.

★ On May 3, 1988, Jinbei Automobile Co., Ltd. was established in Shenyang.

★ On September 27, 1988, China North Industries (Group) Corporation and Germany's Daimler-Benz Company signed a contract for the transfer of heavy-duty vehicle production licenses in Beijing.

★ In October 1988, the longest (871 meters) domestic car assembly line with computer control and 200-day capacity was completed at Shanghai Volkswagen.

★ In June 1989, the first domestic Star-Steyr heavy-duty vehicle was put on the line at Jiqi Steam Plant.

★ In August 1989, FAW's new sedan assembly line assembled the first Audi cars.

★ On January 23, 1990, the State Council approved the “Request for the Establishment of the China Automotive Industry Corporation” of the Ministry of Machinery and Electronic Industry and agreed to establish the China National Automobile Industry Corporation. The Ministry of Machinery and Electronics Industry will be responsible for centralized management. And in the national plan to implement a separate list; Ministry of Machinery and Electronics Industry authorized China National Automotive Industry Corporation to exercise the auto industry management functions.

★ On January 26, 1990, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation was established.

★ In February 1990, the fifth executive meeting of the China Automobile Association held the resolution that the China Federation of Automobile Manufacturers was renamed the China Automobile Industry Association and Hu Xinmin was elected as the chairman. The National Automotive Industry Working Conference was held in Beijing and announced the establishment of China National Automobile Industry Corporation. Cai Shiqing was appointed as the general manager.

★ In April 1990, FAW Car had 30,000 sets of pilot assembly lines for the ribbon cutting.

★ On May 28, 1990, the country's largest auto vehicle test site was built at the second automaker.

★ On October 16, 1990, the 8-ton truck of the Dongfeng EQ1141G (EQ153) type was put into production in batches.

★ In November 1990, a 150,000-vehicle joint venture between FAW and Volkswagen AG was signed in Beijing.

★ On November 20, 1990, the largest joint venture in the automotive industry in China, the 1st automobile factory and the German Volkswagen AG, jointly produced 150,000 vehicles for universal use. The project was officially signed in Beijing.

★ On December 20, 1990, the second car manufacturer and the French company Citroën Automobile Co., Ltd. jointly produced a sedan project in Paris. The contract signed for the first phase of the project, with an annual output of 150,000 C-class ordinary cars. The ultimate goal is to produce 300,000 C-class and B-class ordinary cars annually.

★ In December 1990, the joint venture contract between the two cars and the French company Citroen was signed in France.

★ From January 21st to 24th, 1991, the National Automobile Work Conference was held in Shanghai. Focusing on the current status and development goals of the auto industry, the focus of the industry adjustment in 1991 was to change from a truck to a car. It also called for the overall planning to be carried out in strict accordance with the "three majors and three smalls" determined by the state and focusing on the "big three" layout.

★ On January 31, 1991, Guangzhou City signed an agreement with the French Peugeot Automobile Company. By the end of 1992, the Peugeot 505 car series cars originally produced in France would all be moved to Guangzhou.

★ On February 8, 1991, FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Co., Ltd., the largest joint venture in China's auto industry, was officially established with an investment of 4.2 billion yuan. The ratio of investments between the first automobile manufacturer and the German Volkswagen AG is 6:4. ★ On December 5, 1991, FAW-Volkswagen produced the first Jetta sedan.

★ In January 1992, Vice Premier Zhu Qiji heard from the preparations for the National Automobile Industry Working Conference in 1992: The auto industry must strictly control the total amount, and macro-control must have means. The competent department of the industry must concentrate on protecting key points.

★ On July 15, 1992, at the 39th anniversary of the establishment of the First Automobile Manufacturing Plant, "China First Automobile Group" and "China First Automobile Group Corporation" were formally established. China FAW Group is a conglomerate with multiple forms of trans-regional, inter-departmental, and different ownership systems. Its core enterprise is China FAW Group Corporation.
