On July 22nd, Dongfeng Motor Corporation announced the sales data for the first half of this year. From January to June, the cumulative sales of automobiles were 1,921,100, up 12.1% year-on-year, and the growth rate was 3.74 percentage points higher than the industry. According to the data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, in the first half of the year, China's total sales of cars reached 11.6835 million, an increase of 8.36% year-on-year.
However, from the perspective of the two major business segments, the Dongfeng Passenger Vehicle segment may still need to overcome more challenges than the commercial vehicle segment has long maintained a leading position among several automobile groups.
In the passenger car camp, although Dongfeng has been trying hard to get rid of the fact that sales are too reliant on joint venture brands, from the current point of view, this situation has not changed significantly. In the first half of this year, several joint ventures including Shenlong Motors, Dongfeng Nissan, Dongfeng Honda, and Dongfeng Yueda Kia achieved cumulative sales of 1.303 million units, which accounted for 68% of Dongfeng’s overall sales volume, which was a year-on-year increase of approximately 2%. .
From the sales growth point of view, the limelight of the joint venture once again overshadowed independence. In the first half of the year, the growth rate of Dongfeng Yueda Enterprises was 12.4%, and the growth rate of the remaining joint venture brands was all above 20%. In comparison, the cumulative sales of self-owned branded passenger vehicles in the first half of the year amounted to 364,400, an increase of 11.83% year-on-year, but this growth rate was significantly higher than the average level of the self-owned brand industry. According to data from the China Automobile Association, in the first half of 2014, a total of 3.603 million Chinese brand passenger vehicles were sold, an increase of only 1.78% year-on-year.
From the analysis of specific business units, sales differentiation in the autonomous passenger car brand camp is also more obvious. Among them, Dongfeng Fashion and Dongfeng Nissan Kai Chen both performed well. From January to June this year, they sold 118,400 and 57,900 respectively, an increase of 34.24% and 32.5% year-on-year, respectively; Only accumulated sales of 40,400 vehicles. The SAIC Motor Corporation, which Dongfeng has been catching up with, has accumulated sales of 102,000 units for its core brands Roewe and MG. In addition, Dongfeng’s demeanor also showed a lack of growth, while brands such as Dongfeng Yulon and Dongfeng Honda Siming maintained a growth rate of over 20%, but their sales base was relatively low. The cumulative sales volume in the first half of the year still did not exceed 20,000 vehicles.
According to the medium-term development plan released by Dongfeng at the end of 2011, by 2016, its own brand will have to challenge the sales target of 3 million vehicles, of which Dongfeng's own-brand passenger vehicles will reach the level of 1 million annual sales, and thus achieve joint ventures and Self-owned brands go hand in hand.
