LLNL high repetition rate beat watt laser device to create a new record

The High-Repetition-Rate Advanced Petawatt (MLR) High-Frequency Repetition-Rate PetWatt Laser System developed by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory LLNL for the Beamlines installation in the European Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) Laser System, HAPLS) has created a new world record with an output energy of 16 J and a pulse width of 28 fs (equivalent to ~ 0.5 PW / pulse). Repeat frequency 3.3Hz. With this record, HAPLS devices are already available on Beamlines devices.

In just three years, the HAPLS unit was designed from concept to complete the process of integrating and documenting products. The HAPLS system will be integrated into the Beamlines' laser delivery and control system and will output laser pulses at peak powers exceeding the wattage at 10Hz repetition rate. The ELI program will be available to users by 2018.

Constantin Haefner, project director of advanced photonic technology at LLNL, said of HAPLS: "The HHPLS system's high-frequency repetition is an important turning point, making it the first real-time watt-grade laser to offer re-use.
