Nissan Motors to Produce First Light Commercial Vehicle in the United States
Nissan Motor Co. announced on Thursday that Nissan will invest US$118 million in the transformation and expansion of its Mississippi plant to produce a new light commercial vehicle. This will be Nissan’s first market segment in the US market.
According to Dan Bednarzyk, vice president of Nissan’s Mississippi plant, the plant will have an area of 102,200 square feet. The new model (shown below) will be put into production in 2010, when the existing production models will be discontinued to give way to the production of new models. He also said that Nissan made this investment decision after seeing the company’s sales of light commercial vehicles in overseas markets increased by 8% (800,000) in 2008.
The Nissan Mississippi plant, located in the Canton area, currently produces three full-size pickups, the Quest MPV and the Infiniti QX56 luxury SUV. The plant currently takes four days a week due to sluggish sales. The production capacity of the Nissan Canton Plant in 2007 was 350,000, and in 2008, the output suddenly dropped to 200,000.
In fact, as early as 2008, Nissan Motor announced its intention to invest in the production of light commercial vehicles. However, due to the continuing economic downturn in the US, the auto market was plunging. The Nissan investment plan was once stranded. At present, the sober commercial vehicle market in the United States is dominated by Ford and General Motors.
