The emergence of robotic leading enterprises

Premier Li Keqiang of the State Council hosted the executive meeting of the State Council on April 6 and decided to implement the "Standardization and Quality Improvement Plan for the Equipment Manufacturing Industry."

The meeting requested that in the future, it will aim at the international advanced level, implement industrial infrastructure and smart manufacturing, green manufacturing standardization and quality improvement projects, accelerate the development of key technical standards, and promote key areas such as robots, advanced rail transit equipment, agricultural machinery, and high-performance medical equipment. Standardization will achieve new breakthroughs and strive to increase the conversion rate of international standards in key areas from the current 70% to more than 90% by 2020.

On the same day, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Finance issued the "Robot Industry Development Plan (2016-2020)" (hereinafter referred to as "robot planning").

The robot planning also proposes to greatly improve the quality reliability and market share of domestic robots, through the construction of a standard system, to break through the bottleneck of key technologies and core components, and to make the first breakthrough in the ten iconic areas. In this process, Taxation and other aspects are supported by policies and actively cultivate leading enterprises.

Improving the market share of domestic robots Robot planning shows that during the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” period, we will adhere to the principles of “market-driven, innovation-driven, strengthened foundation, and quality-first” to achieve “two breakthroughs” and “three upgrades” in China's robotics industry. Realize major breakthroughs in key parts of robots and high-end products, and achieve a significant increase in robot reliability, market share, and competitiveness of leading companies.

The plan then proposes the five-year overall goal of industrial development: to form a relatively complete robot industry system, technology innovation capability and international competitiveness have been significantly enhanced, product performance and quality have reached the international level.

According to Zuo Shiquan, director of the Institute of Equipment Industry at the CCID Research Institute of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, quality reliability is a prominent issue facing China's equipment manufacturing industry. "Taking the robot as an example, many products have been made, but the reliability and satisfaction are quite different from those abroad."

Xu Xiaolan, secretary-general of the World Robot Congress, stated that due to the quality gap, foreign countries have a large market share in high-end industrial robotics such as precision, automation, mobilization, and digitalization. China's industrial robots are concentrated in the middle and low-end areas.

Yao Zhimin, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Robotics Industry Alliance, introduced that domestic equipment applications are mainly focused on handling, palletizing, and loading and unloading; foreign brands have an absolute advantage in the field of welding and assembly. In the automotive electronics field, the foreign capital market has reached an 90%.

According to Zuo Shiquan, in terms of market share, China currently accounts for 28% of the world's market share in terms of the number of units, but it may not exceed 10% in terms of value.

According to Zuo Shiquan's prediction, by 2020, the density of industrial robots is expected to exceed 100, occupying this market space, rather than being occupied by foreign brands, the quality of domestic equipment will need to be improved.

Yao Zhimin introduced that the goal of the robot during the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” period is to reach 150,000 sets of industrial robots in China by 2020, and more than 80,000 sets of domestic robots. At the same time, the quality of the robots will increase significantly, and the average time between failures will reach the international advanced level.

The top ten iconic products pioneered the five major tasks of robot planning. The first of these is to promote the first breakthrough of major iconic products. These products include arc welding robots, vacuum (clean) robots, fully autonomously programmed intelligent industrial robots, and humans. Robots, robots, heavy-duty AGVs, fire-fighting and rescue robots, surgical robots, intelligent public service robots, intelligent care robots.

Zuo Shiquan said that the ten iconic products are selected through comparison. On the one hand, they focus on their own needs. On the other hand, there is still a big gap in these areas in China, which requires breakthroughs in key research and industrialization.

Zuo Shiquan believes that behind the gap is China’s shortcomings in the five key components and core technologies. “Accelerators and reducer precision requirements are not particularly high. Several companies in China are doing it. However, in terms of motors, controllers, chips, etc., even if China can do it, there are still some problems with stability.”

The plan therefore proposes to vigorously develop key components of the robot and thoroughly break through five key components such as high-precision reducers, high-performance servo motors and drives, high-performance controllers, sensors, and end-effectors.

In terms of key common technologies, Zuo Shiquan introduced that Chinese equipment is "very backward" in terms of motion control and precise sensing systems. According to some experts' predictions, the gap between China and Japan and the United States will be 15-20 years. “Breakthrough common key technologies are beneficial to the development of the entire industry, but the investment is very large. Individual enterprises do not want to do it from the perspective of their own interests.”

The plan points out that the industry's basic capabilities will be strengthened, key technologies for robotic commonalities will be researched and standard systems will be built, a robot innovation center will be established, and a national robotic inspection and evaluation center will be established.

Standardization is also the requirement of the State Council's executive meeting for equipment manufacturing on April 6.

In Zuo Shiquan's view, the standards of robots should be formulated in the framework of smart manufacturing. The standards system not only includes engineering standards, but also includes standards for communication, products, processes, applications, and system integration. "There are standards to determine the consistency of products, which is also the need for product identification and certification." Zuo Shiquan said.

An important task of actively cultivating leading enterprises' plans is to cultivate leading enterprises. This will support the cross-border integration of Internet companies and traditional robot companies, and lead leading enterprises in a good industrial ecological environment.

Zuo Shiquan believes that it is the competitiveness of leading enterprises that determines the competitiveness of the robot industry. “The robotics industry clearly has economies of scale. For example, large-scale purchase of parts and components has stronger bargaining power, which in turn reduces procurement costs. From a system integration perspective, large companies can provide the entire robot production line, and the market occupied by the service sector is also Very big."

From an international point of view, ABB, Fanuc, Yaskawa Electric, and KUKA are also known as the "Four Big Family" of the robotics industry. These giants occupy more than 70% of the market share of the Chinese robotics industry and almost monopolize robot manufacturing, welding, etc. High-end areas.

According to statistics, the number of robotics companies in China has exceeded 4,000, of which 90% are under 100 million yuan.

Zuo Shiquan believes that Chinese companies and international giants are not on a physical scale. "At present, China has no big robotic company with an annual output of 5,000 units, but there are 20,000 to 30,000 units overseas." Zuo Shiquan said that China is currently in power. The focus will be on fostering 3-5 leading robot companies, including Xinsong, Xinshida, Eft, and Guangzhou CNC.

One of the main points of cultivation is financial support. It is worth noting that although the robot planning was drafted by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, it was issued together with the Ministry of Finance and the National Development and Reform Commission. The plan mentions that it will increase financial and taxation support, and use the central government’s financial and technological plans, industrial transformation and upgrading, and central infrastructure investment. Taiwan (sets) major technical equipment insurance compensation mechanisms and other policies and measures to support the development and application of robots and key components of R & D, industrialization and application.

In addition, Yao Zhimin said that at present, China's robotics industry has seen signs of repeated construction. "This will be mentioned in our plan. We must avoid the mistakes of robots in the photovoltaic industry."
