Renault plans to put into production a joint venture between Dongfeng and Dongfeng Electric in China
According to the "Wall Street Journal" report, Renault Automobile has stated that it is considering the production of electric vehicles in China. This move is part of its proposed $1.2 billion joint venture plan, which will allow Renault to increase its sales in the Chinese market.
The company’s chief operating officer, Carlos Tavares, said that the joint venture project between Renault and China Dongfeng Motor Group has passed the approval of the Ministry of Environmental Protection. It is learnt that approval from the Ministry of Environmental Protection is one of the many approved projects before the establishment of the joint venture continues.
In January of this year, the environmental protection department of Hubei Province in China stated that the joint venture will be established in Wuhan and it plans to invest RMB 7.2 billion with an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles, including SUVs and multi-purpose vehicles.
Tavares did not state the electric vehicle capacity of the new joint venture.
Dongfeng Motor is the second-largest automobile manufacturer in China in terms of output and sales volume, second only to Shanghai Automotive Group. Dongfeng Motor has established joint ventures with Nissan and Kia Motors.
Tavares said on June 13th: “For us, this is a competitive advantage. The Chinese authorities demand that we introduce electric vehicle technology into Dongfeng’s joint venture.†At present, it will determine which specific electric models will be introduced into China. However, he pointed out that Renault is the only company in the world that has four car manufacturers selling electric vehicles.
He said: "It is precisely because of this that we have to decide which electric vehicle to introduce specifically to China. We will discuss this with our partners at an appropriate time."
