Zeng Qinghong: There is still a gap between the automotive industry and pillar industries.
In the past two years, China's auto industry has grown substantially. In 2003, it produced and sold more than 4 million vehicles. According to Zeng Qinghong, deputy of the National People's Congress of Guangdong Province, this output is still less than the annual output of an international multinational auto group. China still needs a large amount of imported auto raw materials and spare parts. The Chinese auto industry still has a considerable gap from the pillar industries.
Deputy Zeng Qinghong, deputy general manager of Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group Co., Ltd., and executive deputy general manager of Guangzhou Honda Automobile Co., Ltd. said in an interview with reporters that GM produced tens of millions of vehicles last year and Toyota Motors nearly 7 million vehicles. Toyota is slightly smaller and also close to 7 million. All exceeded China's full-year production last year. Compared with foreign countries, the average unit price of domestic cars is relatively low, and the total output value is relatively low. Since 1994, the country has positioned the automobile industry as a pillar industry. However, so far, the automobile industry has had limited effects on the national economy and there is still a considerable gap from the pillar industries.
Zeng Qinghong said that from the development experience of Japan, South Korea and the United States, it can be seen that the development of the automobile industry can drive the economic development of the entire country. The automotive industry is a manifestation of the comprehensive level of industry, with a high degree of correlation, which can drive the development of 34 upstream and downstream industries. As the city of Guangzhou formulated a plan for the development of the automobile industry, the automotive, petrochemical and chemical industries have attracted them. Guangzhou is preparing for the entry of cars into families and will continue to accelerate the construction of urban infrastructure that focuses on road traffic. Lin Shusen, secretary of the Guangzhou Municipal Party Committee, once said that the peak of a car entering the Guangzhou family will come within two or three years. The area of a road and parking area occupied by a small car is about 30 square meters, and the increase of 1 million vehicles is 30 million square meters. According to statistics from 2001, the area of the old eight districts in Guangzhou is 32 million square meters. If one million cars are added, the road area in the old eight districts will have to double to accommodate them. So do everything possible to raise money to build a road.
In 2003, Guangzhou invested 16.8 billion yuan in urban construction, of which road transportation facilities accounted for 9.24 billion yuan.
Zeng Qinghong believes that the most pressing task for the Chinese auto industry to become a pillar industry is to first realize the localization of auto raw materials and parts procurement. The steel plates currently used by domestic car manufacturers need a lot of imports, and many key parts and accessories for automobiles also need to be imported. In 2000 alone, the deficit in the import and export of automotive products was close to 10 billion US dollars. In addition, we must accelerate the domestic certification of these raw materials and components.
