FarSounder receives sonar system for polar research vessels at the British Antarctic Survey
FarSounder's farthest range sonar system FarSounder-1000 will be installed at the RRS Sir David Attenborough Polar Research Ship at the British Antarctic Survey. The participation of sonar technology will serve as the core safety feature of this polar research ship under construction.
Pinpoint Electronics of the United Kingdom is the local representative of FarSounder responsible for the project. Sally Dale, general manager of Pinpoint Electronics, said, “I have worked in the shipbuilding industry for many years. I know what is the best way to achieve the highest level of safety in the ship. That is to add a FarSounder sonar to the navigation package system."
It is reported that FarSounder sonar is mainly developed for navigation and obstacle avoidance to help ensure the safety of the ship. The technology and the data it produces are intended to complement the more traditional marine scientific mission sonar. During icebreaking operations, the sonar will be lifted through a tailored hook to protect it from damage.
Currently, the Cammell Laird Shipyard in the UK is building a new $180 million vessel with an ice class design designed to help scientists conduct exploration and scientific research in the Antarctic and Arctic waters.
In 2016, FarSounder's sonar was also used in a residential boat, the World Hike, and arrived at the Ross Ice Shelf, the southernmost sea where ships around the world can sail.
