Hitachi developed a new battery

NEW YORK, Dec. 30 (Reuters) - Maxell, a Hitachi group-owned battery manufacturing subsidiary, recently announced that it has developed a new lithium-ion battery technology that doubles power consumption with the same battery size.

Hitachi reportedly uses a newly developed, silicon-based material to form the battery's negative electrode, which doubles the battery's density. At the Wearable Expo in Tokyo from January 13 to January 15, 2016, Hitachi will showcase lithium batteries made with new technologies.

Hitachi called the new technology "ULSiON", which uses "SiO-C" as the negative electrode active material, and SiO-C is a composite material coated with a carbon coating on the SiO surface. Hitherto, silicon as a negative electrode active material is faced with a problem that expansion and contraction occur during charging and discharging. The task of researchers is to reduce its expansion and contraction to a certain level, and Hitachi now solves this problem.

By using new materials, Hitachi can compress the width of a lithium battery to 13 mm or less, and double the energy density of a new battery at the same size. The new battery can also be charged at different levels of voltage. Hitachi expects the battery discharge termination voltage will be reduced to 2.0V. At low voltage, battery discharge curves made with the new technology are smoother. The lower the battery discharge termination voltage, the more energy it can hold and the better the performance.

Hitachi has put new batteries into commercial products, such as smartphones. The new battery can also form a laminated battery used in wearable devices. In some compact devices can only use a small battery, the future Hitachi battery market demand will become very large.
