Smoking causes hundreds of DNA changes
Scientists have found that smoking causes DNA mutations. There are tens of thousands of sequenced genomic tumors, and they found that smokers will have 150 mutant lung cells. These changes are permanent, and if someone quits, even persist.
Researchers say analyzing the tumor's DNA may help explain the underlying causes of other cancers. This analysis shows a direct link between the number of smokers in a lifetime and the number of tumor DNA mutations.
Sir Michael Stratton, a professor at the Wellingham Trust Sanger Institute, said: "The odds of multiple gene mutations are higher. We call this a key cancer gene, which turns normal cells into cancer cells. Such as the lungs, which are directly exposed to smoke, they may find chemicals in tobacco smoke, of which at least 60 are carcinogenic mutations."
Professor Stratton's smoking in these organs seems to speed up the natural mutation process, but how it is done is mysterious and complex. In the United Kingdom, 35,000 people die of lung cancer each year, and it is estimated that 90% of cases can be prevented.
