US ITC Proposes Up to 55% Tariff on Chinese Tires
Recently, the US International Trade Commission proposed to impose a punitive tariff of up to 55% on low-cost tires imported from China. As of this writing, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce still has no response to this matter. And Giti Tire said on Monday that the accusation was unfounded.
The United States International Trade Commission (ITC) announced that it has taken special safeguard measures for Chinese tires and proposed a three-year special tariff on Chinese-made tires for passenger cars and light trucks. The additional duties from Year 1 to Year 3 are respectively It is 55%, 45%, 35%.
The North American Iron and Steel Workers' Federation said that the import of Chinese tires has caused thousands of Americans to lose their jobs.
According to the law, Obama must make a decision when the appeal period expires in September this year.
According to data provided by the United Steel Workers Union of the United States, China was the country with the largest number of imported automobile tires in the United States in 2008. It exported nearly 46 million tires to the United States, valued at more than US$1.7 billion. Chinese-made tires cost about 50 to 60 US dollars each, which is about half of the price of some high-end brands in the United States.
As of this writing, the Ministry of Commerce still has no response to the matter. If this is the case in the future, some Chinese tire companies that use the United States as a major exporter will be severely hit.
At present, China’s largest tire manufacturer, Jiatong Tire, said on Monday that the move is definitely a protectionist approach. The accusation is groundless and Chinese tires are only providing services to American consumers. Chinese manufacturers have gradually filled the market of low-priced tires that have long been neglected in the US market.
