WACKER Leather Polymer Composites Winners

The leather polymer composites developed by Wacker Chemie AG and its partners were awarded the CO2 emission reduction award in the Material Design Technology Award at the International Exhibition on Material Applications, Surfaces and Product Engineering in Munich on October 18th.


The leather polymer composites were compounded by WACKER and its partners using VINNEX powder binders based on vinyl acetate and ethylene copolymers and recycled leather scraps. The basis of this new material is natural fiber composite technology. Using new technologies, they pressed the leftovers of the leather industry into pellets and then compounded them with VINNEX powder adhesives to make film rolls. They can be used as a firm floor covering and can also be used as protective covers or furniture inside automobiles. And veneer wall.

The technology award includes four categories of materials, products, surfaces and technologies, and CO2 emission reduction. The Emission Reduction CO2 Award is particularly focused on assessing whether materials and energy consumption have been saved during production or processing, as well as the protection of raw materials, recycling, or the simplification of processing steps.


The ability to recycle, use waste to create value, and conserve energy are key features of new leather polymer composites. According to WACKER, the application of this technology can reduce CO2 emissions by 30% compared to the use of older products.
